North Vernon: A Study in Fire, Form and Nature
Founded in 2023 by Roman Spataro and Noah Kreider, North Vernon is a project-based design studio working across interiors, furniture, installations, and objects. Rather than approaching these disciplines as separate practices, the studio considers them part of a broader spatial language—one shaped by material, atmosphere, experience, and the particular character of each project.

At the core of North Vernon’s work is an understanding of design as a form of spiritual formation. Beauty is not treated as something purely visual, but as something informed by nature, lived experience, and the emotional qualities of the environments we inhabit. Each project is approached individually, allowing its context and circumstances to guide the development of what the studio describes as a holistic aesthetic response.

This sensibility is particularly present in North Vernon’s furniture. The collection seeks to distill the body’s sensory experiences in nature into their simplest forms. Dense oak is shaped into substantial, organic silhouettes and charred by hand, leaving the material visibly marked by the process. The resulting pieces carry a sense of weight and permanence, while carefully controlled proportions bring refinement to their otherwise elemental character.

Although developed through the tradition of modernism, the collection began with something far more primitive: the ritual of making a campfire.

The image is simple and instinctive—a body seated on firm stone in the cold of night, gathered around a source of heat and light. From this experience, North Vernon began to identify a vocabulary of forms, surfaces, and materials. Charred wood, grounded proportions, darkness, warmth, and physical presence gradually became symbols of an experience that is at once ordinary and deeply human.

Rather than reproducing nature literally, the furniture translates its sensations. The objects recall the solidity of stone, the irregularity of natural forms, and the transformation of wood through fire. Their presence is quiet but deliberate, balancing rawness with precision and primitive references with a distinctly contemporary restraint.

In North Vernon’s work, furniture becomes less an isolated object than an extension of an atmosphere. Through material, proportion, and elemental processes, the studio searches for a kind of beauty rooted not in ornament, but in experiences that feel familiar at an almost instinctive level.
